December 2011 An application was received on behalf of a 38 year old man with Huntington's Disease. This previously very active young man now suffers from involuntary movements, frequent falls and has impaired speech. Our donation of £1,495 has enabled the provision of a specialist seat to meet his postural needs and to provide him with a level of comfort.

December 2011 Talking with Hands is a national charity attempting to meet the needs of the deaf community. Their application to ACT was for funding for a project for deaf children aged 0-5, many of whom are born to hearing parents. The project's aim is to run a specialist group providing parents, grandparents, family and friends the skills to communicate with the children through play and interaction. ACT pledged £2,000 towards this ground-breaking, innovative project which is planned to be used as a model throughout the UK.

November 2011 An application was received for help to fund a communication package for a little boy with severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy who is non verbal. He is receiving speech therapy to develop his use of symbols but required the symbol package to learn to communicate back to people. ACT's £320 donation enabled the family to acquire the package.

November 2011 The family of a little girl with severe autism and ADHD applied to ACT for a safe space. The little girl who is non verbal can become frustrated when she is not understood and this can result in her being very distressed and self harming or being agressive to others. The provision of a safe space will provide the family with an area where sensory stimulation can be minimized which will help to calm her and keep her safe. ACT's pledge of £2,000 started the family off in their fundraising efforts.

November 2011 ACT received an application from a 62 year old lady who has undergone brain surgery, suffered a stroke and is having treatment for cancer. Her request was for assistance to fund a week's respite at Refresh Respite Centre. ACT were delighted to provide the £650 funding for the break for her where she was cared for by staff with the required expertise.

The Lake District Calvert Trust was the first UK centre to provide outdoor educational activities specifically for people with physical, learning and/or sensory disabilities They have welcomed more than 65,000 visitors to their centre in the 30 years they have been in existence . ACT were delighted to be able to pledge £2,500 for equipment for their new Snoezelen room, a sensory room which they hope will benefit many of their guests during their leisure time.

We were contacted by the mother of James from Bedfordshire to see if we could help with funding a specialist piece of equipment for her 8 year old son who has Cerebral Palsy and severe Global Developmental Delay. James is unable to walk, talk, sit or stand and is fed via a gastronomy tube. A Dynavox V-Max Communication System attached to his wheelchair would allow him to have a "voice" by touching images, symbols or words on a screen. The ACT Foundation were very pleased to offer £1,500 towards the cost of this vital communication aid and the family took delivery of the Dynavox in March of this year. As you can see from the photograph, James is very happy with his new way of communicating.
